Last year, PowerStream's depart- mental leaders conducted more than 2,400 site visits. These visits are an integral part to the company's strategy and are key in evaluating the corpo- rate performance, says Bentz. "It's showing awareness and support for the fi eld staff… we're looking to make sure they have their tailboard in place, all their PPE is on properly, that they're compliant with all our policies, but really it's a chance to talk to them about what they're doing and about working safely," he says. Workers in PowerStream's high-risk areas — such as those who work with electricity and large equipment — par- ticipate in weekly safety meetings. "There's more risk in the nature of the work they do," says Read. "They work elevated at different heights, they climb poles, we work on live lines sometimes, they do a bunch of different elements and we feel more attention needs to be promoted in that area to keep them sharp." "Around Christmas time we will do a safety talk on stress and dealing with family stress and money issues." Employees participate in a variety of monthly drills, including fi re safety, bomb threats and lost children. "Although very little does go wrong on a regular basis, because we're such a public building, the potential for any- thing to go wrong is out there and our staff have to be ready for it," says Kerry Painter, president and general manager. When it comes to emergency pre- paredness, all employees have small cards hanging from their ID tags that outline what they need to do in different emergency situations. For example, there is one card for "code red" which indicates a fi re and another one for "code black" which signals a bomb threat. "You may have practiced but if something really happened and you kind of panic, you're wearing it around your neck so you can see 'I go here, this is what I do,'" says Painter. Scotiabank Convention Centre has a lofty goal of having a smoke-free workplace, says Sweeney. "We're looking at moving the smok- ing area so it's less convenient to smoke at work and not as appealing — that's a simple, logical fi x," she says. The convention centre offers a smoking cessation program to help employees quit and is looking into offering incentives to quit smoking or for those who do not smoke. In December 2012, the centre opened a fi tness room that includes several pieces of cardio equipment, weights, medicine balls and a heavy bag. Employees use it before work, during their lunch breaks and after their shifts. "We wanted something that would be available to all of our employees so the fact that it's inclusive is fantastic," says Sweeney. "It's wellness, it's social, it's team-building, it's fi tness — and it's driven a lot by the employees." All-inclusive safety F or 50 years, Capi- talCare has prided itself in being a leader in continuing care. It was one of the first organizations in Alberta to introduce best practices for continuing care — and that includes occupational safety. "We believe in leading rather than reacting," says Aileen Belke, manager of safety services and claims, "And our commitment to safety comes from the top down." One innovation Belke and her team introduced was adapt- ing safety practices to ensure they work equally for residents and the organiza- tion's 2,700 employees. She explains that in facilities such as CapitalCare's, staff historically put resident safety above their own, often at the cost of hurting themselves.
