I have been working on Canada's Safest Employers Award since the very fi rst day I started this job and I am so happy to fi nally see it all come together. We had a record number of high-quality applications this year and the judges cer- tainly had their work cut out for them. The addition of the new categories — and splitting up some others — really helped the competition gain trac- tion. Transportation and utilities are no longer grouped together, they now standalone as separate categories. Hospitality, health care, and oil and gas were added to the existing list of building and construction, retail and services, manufacturing, public sector, and mining and natural resources. These 10 categories truly represent the wide range of health and safety considerations across the sectors. For example, they allow employers in retail to put forth a strong application without being compared to the completely different kind of safety initiatives found in oil and gas. The employee perception survey helped the judges ensure the information on the nomination form rang true for workers in the fi eld. Hallmark Tubulars, the gold winner in mining and natural resources, matches senior employees with new work- ers to act as safety mentors. (See page 19 for more of the company's initiatives.) Parkland County, the gold winner in the public sector category, is charged with keeping employees safe from bears and cougars. (Find out how the organization does it on page 19.) And CapitalCare, the gold winner in health care, implemented ergonomics best practices to reduce the number of injuries for its workers. (Read more on page 21). This year, we introduced a special Wellness Award. This category aims to honour those employers that have outstanding programs in place supporting employee mental well-being and overall health. (See page 22 to fi nd out why Morguard Investments took home this inaugural award.) I'd like to extend a special thank you to our judges. They spent hours and hours meticulously grading each application on the shortlist and we are very grateful for their hard work. This year's judges are: Andrew Cooper, Michael Dodd, Bernard Dufour, Phil Germain, Glyn Jones, Mike McKenna, Corinne Paul, Douglas Rourke, Dennis Ryan, Linda Scott, Maureen Shaw, Warren Shepell and Nora Spinks. The 2014 competition will be launching in January. In the New Year, please visit www.safestemployers.com for the nomination form and more information on eligibility and the judging process. We hope to get even more nominations next year, and continue to grow the contest. And keep in mind I am always interested in hearing from you. I'd love to know what you'd like to see in the magazine in the coming year. What's missing for you? What do you wish we would cover? What columns or sections can you not live without? Feel free to email me with any feedback or suggestions you may have.
