10 Canadian Occupational Safety www.cos-mag.com PEOPLE & PLACES Eyes on Canada Mount Vernon Mills, a manufacturer of textile, chemical and related products for the apparel, indus- trial, institutional and commercial markets is poised to strengthen its Canadian presence with the appointment of Carolyn Black, a 20-year veteran of the textile industry, as its new FR technical specialist. In her new role, Black will focus on the com- pany's fl ame resistant fabric brand, with the goal to increase Mount Vernon FR brand awareness, especially in Cana- dian provinces, a company statement said. Over the course of her career, Black has worked with various companies, including Bulwark, DuPont Canada and Shell Canada Limited. Black graduated with a bachelor's degree in science from the University of Calgary, where she also minored in business. In addition, she has completed numerous other postgraduate courses in the areas of textile design, personal leadership, project management, architectural and industrial design, and client relation- ship development. Black's appointment comes at a time of growth for the com- pany and brand, as Mount Vernon Mills last year unveiled its new branding initiative for Mount Vernon FR. Going global Industrial Scientific's newly leased 19,500-square-foot facility near Pitts- burgh is the company's new global distribution centre, expected to support its growing business. e new global distribution center supports Industrial Scientifi c's global order fulfi llment, as well as its regional manufactur- ing and instrument repair operations. Previously housed at the company's headquarters in Oakdale, Pa., these functions faced operational challenges brought on by business growth, the company said. e distribution centre improves the effi ciency of order pro- cessing as well as overall responsiveness to customers with its dedicated interna- tional, domestic ground and domestic air processing stations for customer orders, the company said. "Industrial Scientifi c has experienced signifi cant growth over the last decade," said Jim Quasey, vice-president of global opera- tions. " e distribution center provides the space needed to effi ciently deliver to our customers the life-saving products that they rely on every day." e global distribution center is located in the Imperial Business Park at 150 Crown Court, Oakdale, Pa. 2013 Youth Video Contest winners announced With more youth entering workplaces in Saskatchewan, it's the goal of Work- Safe Saskatchewan to ensure youth understand health and safety issues and their rights and responsibilities as employees. e video contest chal- lenged high school students to submit an original two-minute video on safety in the workplace with the theme "It's your job: ere's no such thing as a stupid question." e winners of the 4th Annual Youth Video Contest are: fi rst place, A Workplace Dream by Jacob Farrell, Luke Halyk and Joel Kereluke teacher Mark Meldrum (Grade 10 and 11, Foam Lake Composite School); second place, ey're Only Chasing Safety by James Fredericks and Landon Selinger, teacher Tom Schwinghamer (Grade 11, Humboldt Collegiate Ins ti- tute); and third place, Blood Red by eresa Campbell, Nathan Robins and Tanner Wur-Lucko, teacher Joel Diet- rich (Grade 11, Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon). e three winners have advanced to the fi rst-ever national Fan Favourite contest to win an additional $1,000. e videos can be found on the "It's Your Job" contest page on YouTube.
