www.thesafetymag.com/ca 31 What happened on the day? Though they weren't exactly what we had planned at the start of the year, our virtual event ended up being a roaring success! "It was different [than previous years] clearly because we're in a COVID world, but it was very enjoyable to see the different categories. I think people take a lot of pleasure from participating. And I think it's great that despite COVID, [COS] has succeeded in keeping people's attention focused on something that is important for all of us. It was a great event," said Phil Verster, CEO and president of Metrolinx, and winner of our 2020 CEO of the Year award. Our revamped virtual awards saw the arrival of a series of panels graciously sponsored by industry heavy-hitters MSA The Safety Company, Avetta, Bruce Power, the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) and WSIB Ontario. Our digital event opened at 12 p.m. EST. Throughout the afternoon, we hosted panels with our finalists on hot button topics in the OHS sphere, such as how COVID has impacted the construction industry, how to build a career in safety and how to be a good safety leader (you can find more on the panels in this issue). We all learned a lot, and I'm sure that many of you saw some familiar faces. Then, at 3 p.m. EST, our MC, Global News host and journalist Mike Arsenault, announced all of this year's winners — live! You can discover more on our finalists and winners in the next few pages. Massive congratulations to this year's nominees and winners — and a huge thank you to all those who attended Canada's Safest Employers Awards.
