The possibility of suspension trauma is a serious concern when fall arrest systems are used. This potentially fatal condition occurs when a person is suspended motionless in the harness while awaiting rescue. In this vertical, hanging position, blood tends to pool around the legs and is unable to re-circulate back into the heart efficiently. The person must be rescued quickly (under 10 minutes) and gradually brought to a horizontal position to avoid potential cardiac arrest. with the legs (least desirable option)
