E D I T O R I A L THE summer months are finally here, although under the shadow of COVID-19, it is shaping up to be a very different kind of summer for most here in Canada. For many, this pandemic has been a tragedy on a scale that plenty of us have rarely seen in our lifetimes (and personally, one I hope that I will not see again any time soon). It's not just a global health crisis, not just an economic crisis, but something with overwhelming ramifications, many of which are yet unknown. As we slowly come out of this pandemic — and quite frankly, this process may take months, even years — I think about a quote from John F. Kennedy, often cited in times like these: "In a crisis, be aware of the danger — but recognize the opportunity." What opportunities are there waiting for us after this pandemic? Perhaps it's a chance to re-evaluate how we do our jobs, what a workspace can be and, essentially, the importance of occupational health and safety. Much has been made in recent weeks of "the new normal" and the post-pandemic landscape. For me, I think that this should also be a time to go back to basics, to hit the refresh button. As many workers return to their workplaces, now is the perfect time to restart with best health and safety practices in mind. In this issue, COS spoke with experts on best-practice ergonomics for those going back to work. Indeed, many of us have been working from home since March, and as offices start to slowly open up, it might be a bit of a shock to the system to once again be taking public transport and sitting at one's office desk in a space that will most likely have changed to accommodate physical distancing guidelines. We are also focusing on some, quite literally, hot-button topics this month. Fire safety is a perennial issue, and this month COS takes a look at a huge concern for OH&S specialists, flammable liquids. Plus, our PPE focus has landed on heat stress prevention: What is it? What can you do about it? And what kind of equipment is out there? And let us not forget about OH&S training. This issue will offer expert-led guidance on the key aspects of a successful training program. Lastly, because it should not be all doom and gloom, I will leave you with some good news. COS editor Amanda Silliker (currently on maternity leave) won gold at the National Media Awards: B2B in May! She won for Best Feature Article: Trade for a piece called "Welcome Home," which was featured in last year's August/September issue. Here at COS, we are very proud of Amanda and proud of this accolade. Quite a few of you have sent over your congratulations, and for that we are very grateful.
