34 Canadian Occupational Safety www.cos-mag.com TOOLS OF THE TRADE CUTTING SAFETY LIGHT DUTY The S7 safety cutter by Pacific Handy Cutter is equipped with a long-lasting, rugged, cast metal safety blade and guard system, designed specifi cally for continuous or occasional top carton cutting. Its blunt safety tip blade prevents puncture wounds and damaged merchandise, and it is enhanced with addi- tional safety features throughout. The safety blade and guard activation system safely extend the blade and guard in tandem, protecting against exposed razor blade cuts while cutting. Additionally, since the blade and guard extends for cutting only, the spring- back action eliminates the risk of cutter injuries, says the manufacturer. Designed as a universal right and left handed cutter, the S7 is a three-in-one tool that is equipped to handle demanding stocking and warehouse tasks. The S7 is perfect for light-duty cut- ting and functions as a tape splitter and tray display cutter. It is ideal for warehousing, grocery, facilities and retail workers. www.go-phc.com LONG BLADE The new Secunorm 380 by Martor is a safety knife with a blade extension of 7.8 centimetres and automatic blade retraction. Thanks to the long blade extension, the cutter is suitable not only for cardboard boxes up to four layers thick, bagged goods and all types of fi lm, but also for particularly thick materials like foam, polysterene, insulating wool and expanding foam. Also, certain types of cuts, such as the slicing of paper webs and the separation of end covers on rolls of paper, can be carried out easily, says the manufacturer. At the same time, the automatic blade retraction ensures that the blade disappears in the handle as the user has completed the cutting — meaning it can't injure him. The ergonomic handle with the integrated soft grip and the grooves on the slider mean users can work in a particularly com- fortable way. The blade can be replaced as necessary and quickly without any tools, but it cannot come out of the handle unintentionally thanks to a safety device. The metal strips inside, which are protected against breakage and wear, are appropriate for even the heaviest use, says the manufacturer. www.martor.com INTERCHANGEABLE HEAD The Klever Xchange safety cutter has an interchangeable head design. Users are able to keep the handle and replace the blade with various head options: a two-sided head (best for all-around cutting and versatility due to its large throat and heavy duty blade); double wall head (for job sites that deal with double wall cardboard on a regular basis); and all-metal blade. Titanium coated blades are available in both double blade and double wall heads. The ergonomic "soft touch" handle reduces hand fatigue and stress. The recessed blade prevents contact with fi ngers, elimi- nating costly injuries, and prevents contact with contents, eliminating expensive product damage, says the manufacturer. The back end of the product features a tape splitter. www.kleverinnovations.net FLAME RESISTANT DENIM JEANS Mount Vernon FR and Carhartt have teamed up to launch the Car- hartt Flame Resistant Rugged Flex Jean. The jeans combines FR denim with stretch technology to provide comfort and protection in any work environment, while offering unique fl exibility for maximum range of motion, says the manufacturer. The jeans are made of fabric with an elastometric fi bre that has bilateral fl ex, allowing it to elongate sideways and diagonally, eliminating any sagging or bagging, and making reaching and bending easier. The product features an arc-resistant button closure, a brass zipper fl y with Nomex FR zipper tape and triple-stitched main seams for added strength and durability. The jeans are available in a deep indigo shade and are mechanically washed to create a soft fi nish. They give workers the reliability and durability they need on the job, while main- taining the comfort and style of their favorite pair of jeans, says the manufacturer. The jeans meet the performance requirements of ASTM F1506, comply with NFPA 70E and are UL classifi ed to NFPA 2112. www.carhartt.com and www.mvmfr.com FLAME SHIELD The Cooler Heads Flame Shield Model FX1 is head and face pro- tection from fl ash fi res. In its passive state, the unit is worn over the shoulders, much like a pair of shoulder pads in football or hockey, but without the added bulk. The FX1 is secured with easy- to-attach and remove clips, just beneath the worker's arms, and is a natural extension to the FR coverall, says the manufacturer, which is based in Victoria. The Flame Shield FX1 is designed to be worn over standard fl ame resistant clothing, and can be worn in all weather conditions. The shield is designed to be comfortable, fl exible, non-restrictive and easy to put on and take off. The product deploys after detecting a rise in temperature, indicating the pres- ence of a fl ash fi re. At 100 C, the sensors are activated and immediately trigger a release of compressed gas which initiates a rapid expansion of the shield. The average duration of a fl ash fi re episode is three sec- onds. Once the danger has passed, the wearer pulls down or tears away the protective shield. The most important factor is that the wearer's head and face are protected from the fl ash fi re incident and they won't be subjected to scarring or disfi guring burns. http://getcoolerheads.com LADIES' FR LAPCO FR has introduced a new ladies' FR uniform line. The line provides great fi tting, comfort- able, fl ame-resistant uniforms for women. The line, which includes FR advanced comfort uniform shirts and pants and FR classic fi t and modern fi t jeans, are made to fi t and fl atter all women. This allows women to be safe on the job without the inconvenience of wearing men's or unisex sized uni- forms. All items in the ladies' FR line are available in misses' and women's sizes. Available colours are grey, khaki and navy. All items in the line are UL classifi ed to NFPA 2112 and compliant with ASTM F1506 and NFPA 70E. www.lapco.com HSE PRODUCTS ORGANIC ABSORBENT SpillFix, an industrial organic absorbent, is made from a byproduct of the coconut called coir, which is an organic, renewable resource that is non-carcinogenic, con- tains no chemicals and is silica free. When compared to clay-based absorbents, SpillFix clients need 80 per cent less product to clean up spills in less than half the time, says the manufacturer. SpillFix is dust-free, non-abrasive and there is no after residue, which is often left with heavy, sticky clay or absorbent pads, and it can be reused to clean up more than one spill. SpillFix is also landfi ll safe — it has been tested to United States Environmental Protection Agency Leachate standards — providing lower disposal costs than other absorbent products with no envi- ronmental impact. It is biologically stable and free of harmful silica dust, and it absorbs hydrocarbon spills by encapsulating the liquid and trapping it inside its hollow channel structure. Used SpillFix that has absorbed hydrocarbons can be used as a fuel source in energy producing incinerators. www.spillfi x.com GRIP, OIL PROTECTION Ansell has introduced the HyFlex 11-926, the fi rst lightweight HyFlex style to combine the protection of three-fourths dip coating and the performance of an oil grip in a single, fl exible glove. The HyFlex 11-926 features two innovative Ansell technologies: RIPEL Liquid Repellence Technology and Ansell GRIP Technology. The former pre- vents oil or lubricants from making even incidental contact with the wearer's skin, reducing the risk of skin irritation for improved hand health, while the latter is a patented grip feature that wicks away oil and moisture from the surface of the glove, ensur- ing safer handling and secure grip. The result is an innovative combination of fl exibility, grip and com- fort that gives users the ability to do their jobs safely and productively, while minimizing risk of irritation and discomfort, says the manufacturer. Ansell HyFlex 11-926 gloves are available in six sizes and are ideal for a number of industries, including automotive and auto original equipment manufacturer (OEM), electrical machinery, metal fabrication, power tools and transportation equipment. www.ansell.com SNAP-ON SHIELD Canadian-owned Zenith Safety Products offers safety goggles with an attached shield.
