WorkSafe Saskatchewan announces award winners The winner of the 2014 WorkSafe Sas- katchewan Safe Worker award is Calvin Greenstein from Novozymes BioAg. The award is given to a worker who helps create a safer workplace by identifying hazards and introducing new safety initiatives. The two fi nalists for the award are Shane Kivol of Mosaic Potash and Debra Bowman of Kerrobert Integrated Health Care. Greenstein was nominated for looking into the ergonomics of Novozymes' load- ing docks where heavy forklift traffi c was congesting a confi ned area. In addition, loading product involved using a forklift to suspend thousand kilogram bags over the workers. Thanks to Greenstein's efforts, the safety and workfl ow of the loading line improved dramatically and incidents and injuries have been eliminated. The 2014 WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe Employer award winner is Cenovus Energy, the Weyburn facility. The award is given to an employer who shows leadership in health and safety. The two fi nalists for the award are LK Auto and the Canadian Salt Company. Cenovus is committed to employee engagement. Safety is threaded through- out the organization and the communities where Cenovus operates. The oil company has a strong hazard identifi cation and risk assessment process that it uses in every task. "Cenovus and Calvin are great examples of how implementing strategies to reduce risks and hazards in the workplace can make a difference in injury prevention," said Deputy Minister for Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Mike Carr. "It's important that all Saskatchewan employers and workers continue to make safe work practices a priority." This is the 11th year in a row that time-loss injury rates have decreased in Saskatchewan. 8 Canadian Occupational Safety www.cos-mag.com PEOPLE&PLACES fan gets hockey stick signed by trevor linden Photo: Arne Huse darcy cretin, cenovus, and calvin greenstein, novozymes Bioag Roundtable a big success By Mike Archer The 2014 British Columbia Safety Charter annual roundtable took place May 1 in Burnaby, B.C., and, according to many who attended, it was the most inspirational roundtable to date. Charter ambassa- dor Trevor Linden, the newly appointed president of hockey operations for the Vancouver Canucks, was on hand to greet delegates and sign autographs. Retired International Space Station commander Chris Hadfi eld was the event's keynote speaker. Had- fi eld recounted some of the harrowing experiences he faced as commander of the International Space Station and described his philosophy around risk. "To me, the only good reason to take a risk is that there's a decent possibility of a reward that out- weighs the hazard," he said. Delegates asked many questions of the astronaut and a number of interesting discussions ensued, including how to keep your cool in a crisis. "Competence means keeping your head in a crisis, sticking with a task even when it seems hopeless and improvising good solutions to tough problems when every second counts. It encompasses ingenuity, determination and being prepared for anything," said Hadfi eld. This year's CEO panel included David McAnerney, president and CEO of SunRype; Frank Saunders, vice-president of nuclear oversight and regulatory affairs at Bruce Power; and Marius Jacobs, vice-president of RISKmap North America. They spoke of the need for management and employees to be on the same page regarding health and safety. For that to happen, the panellists said agreement on individual assessment of risk was needed and for that to occur, there has to be an open and honest exchange of accurate information. McAnerney said it is important to know company programs inside out and then ensure you fi nd out what your people really know about them. Perhaps, more importantly, fi nd out what they don't know. "I've often said that leadership is getting action out of others. The best way to get the right action is to get the right people," he said.
